Recently I caught up with 1stStop’s Artist of The Week Winner: Jéan P. I tried to stay away from the same boring interview questions popular artists get bombarded with on a daily basis. Instead, I pulled a few ideas from what i’ve been seeing in the industry lately, seeing what Jéan’s opinion was. As you will see below, his responses are unlike many of his peers in the game. I’m sure you’ve seen certain artists evolve into so called “ringtone rappers”. Their current style of music gains them money and fame, but it is far from the raw, young artist that they once were. In your opinion, is this something that should be viewed as a natural progression or just a ploy to cater to the mainstream market?

“I feel like it could be both. Being an artist you eventually want to benefit from your work so some will dip into the “business” and go into ringtones, fashion, film and so and so. Look at Will Smith, he went from rhyming into acting and excelled at it but he’s still an emcee at heart. You have some guys who pick up the mic for profit and its kind of sad but in the end they only play themselves.”
